My Tummy Tuck Story
My reasons for having the surgery were mostly self-image
I actually decided to have a tummy tuck done as an afterthought when I was making inquiries about a breast augmentation procedure. I was thinking I might get a tummy tuck done down the road but was told it would be cheaper to have them both done at the same time.
My reasons for having the procedure were mostly self-image but some were comfort. With the tummy tuck, due to the loss of elasticity of my skin on my tummy caused by a combination of age and my weight bouncing up and down from 63 kg to 90 kg often and over a short number of years, I was left with a tummy skin just hung off my body that was not very attractive. Comfort wise, I like wearing jeans and ones that fit my butt did not allow space to try to hide my excess belly skin under. Either I wore baggy ass jeans or wore ones too small in the waist cutting me in two when I sat down.
My consultation, surgery and follow up appointments all went well. I knew what to expect before and after surgery. I had some minor issues post surgery, not related to the surgical procedure but complications with stitches not dissolving as were supposed to and a small scar correction procedure a year later but all concerns were attended to promptly and successfully.
The surgery took place on the clinic site. I was surprised to see how many people were actually required for the surgical team. I think I counted eight. I stayed overnight due to having two procedures done at the same time and could not have asked for better care.
The worst of the procedure experience was the shock when I first saw the incision
The best thing through my experience of the procedure is obviously the results. I am 53 and I look and feel good in a bikini. I am very happy that I had the Tummy Tuck done. I would do it again. I guess I actually did do them twice but not the entire procedures twice. The worst of the procedure experience was the shock when I first saw the incision and dealing with the drain tubes they insert because you have to leave them in for a while after. The incision looked like a shark attack wound as you can see in my picture taken at 2-weeks. In time though, most of the jagged folds that looked really bad at first healed into themselves and they smoothed over. The human body is magnificent healing unit if you are healthy. The reason it looks so hacked and uneven is because after they cut away the extra skin, the edges they have left to try to stitch back together no longer fit together so they have to make tucks here and there across the incision to make it fit while ensuring that proper blood flow is restored. My incision looked straight across my belly after surgery but for some reason, probably gravity and weakened skin, as I healed it started to get lower on one side until eventually about 5cm at the edge started to fold out and droop over. This could have been corrected with minor surgery with the use of local anaesthetics. In my case though, I was scheduled for an upcoming corrective procedure to have an implant replaced so they did it at the same time.
I didn’t find it to be very painful
They have you wear surgical stockings during and after surgery to avoid any blood clotting. It makes it much easier to get around if you tuck one collection gadget from the drain tubes into the top of each stocking instead of trying to carry them. Plus it helps prevent them from falling and/or pulling out. Pain medication causes constipation so make sure that you have and start using herbal laxatives as soon as you get home. Massaging an incision as it heals at an acceptable pain level helps to reduce scar tissue and itching. Ask when is good for you to start doing this safely ASAP after surgery.
Don’t double up on pain medication or you might fall out of bed like I did!
I didn’t even realize that they had grafted a completely new belly button until about a month later when I tried to put in a belly button ring and the hole was gone!
One of the common issues people have is that whatever the material is that they use for stitches that is supposed to dissolve does not dissolve in MANY people and ends up being rejected by the body like foreign matter. I have pictures of this happening. It is not pretty and I was lucky that it did not cause much permanent scarring or lead to gangrene. The only “good” part of that is that it happens while your body is still very numb so I didn’t find it to be very painful.
I have nothing but positive things to say about all of the staff I met there
Everything worth having is expensive these days. Is having a nice looking expensive car more important than your self-image? The Landings staff took very good care of me. All of my concerns were dealt with promptly and professionally. I have nothing but positive things to say about all of the staff I met there. All said and done and knowing the amount of time that the actual surgery took I feel the cost was fair.
